One of the many glories
of the Cathedral is the outstanding music which can
be heard throughout the year. The choir, which has
been in existence since 1296, is made up of eighteen
Boy Choristers, twenty-two Girl Choristers, and Lay
Clerks. The boys are educated at the Cathedral Choir
School and are eligible to receive a 50% bursary
off their boarding fees. The girls come from a variety
of schools including the Choir School. The opportunities
afforded to choristers is unparalleled and we are
proud of our achievements in this field. The musical
tradition is an asset, which requires constant nurture.
Your help and support will secure the financial future
of this unique tradition.
Daily sung Evensong forms the larger part
of the choir's work. The remainder of its schedule
comprises two weekly Sunday morning services, concerts
both at home and abroad and occasional broadcasts.
In the last twelve months the BBC has recorded
two editions of Songs of Praise in the Cathedral.
We are seeking funds
and endowments to ensure that the musical traditions
of the Cathedral are developed and extended.
